How to Create a Study Space for Your Child

Now more so than ever, a study space is an important addition to the home. Kids would quite happily complete their homework in the back of the car on their way to school… but a designated haven for learning will not only improve concentration, it will stimulate your child’s imagination and development. We’ve highlighted some steps below to get you well on your way to creating a study space for your child...

Find or Make Space

Creating routine is important for study: a specific space and time for learning will develop a healthy learning habit, becoming part of day-to-day life for your little one. The first step in choosing the space for your child to study is thinking about where they might learn best. Older children and teens may prefer to study alone in their bedrooms, but younger children might feel a need to be surrounded by the ebb and flow of family life as they complete their tasks with parents within easy reach for those trickier spellings or questions!

If you’re short on space in your child’s bedroom, consider an under-bed study spot! Loft beds provide a cosy area away from it all without adding to your furniture’s footprint and contain ample space for a desk and chair. On its lowest setting, the Tidy Desk is the perfect choice for placing underneath your Boori loft bed.

If you have a younger child who would benefit from studying downstairs among family life, designate an area or corner of the kitchen or living room, with their back facing the hustle and bustle! Our Tidy Table is compact and has a simple design to suit the aesthetic of any home.

Consider Comfort

It’s imperative that your child is comfortable when studying: an adjustable chair with a sturdy back will provide support for study periods. Our Tidy Study Chair will see your little one through childhood as it is fully adjustable and made with sustainable timber.

Not all children enjoy sitting at a table or desk to learn. When reading or listening to podcasts, they may absorb more when completely comfortable sprawling across their floor or lounging on a beanbag. Think about adding a comfy reading corner if your child is the horizontal type, add a bookshelf close by to keep reading materials within arms’ reach!

Let There Be (plenty of!) Light

A lack of light or the incorrect type of light can leave your little one straining their eyes to read their homework or books. The natural light of daytime through a window is optimum for your child to study in, but if you’ve designated and under-bed nook for study or it’s a darker time of year, consider adding a bright and adjustable desk lamp that your child can direct to where they need it most.

Organisation

“I need more paper!” “My pencil’s blunt!” “I only want to write with my very specific shade of blue pen with the fluffy character on the end!”. Children will try every excuse not to get on with their homework right away. Provide everything they need within easy reach, giving them the tools for studying independently.

Our Modular Storage Boxes are a great way of adding a modern organisational storage solution to your homework area. Add child-friendly house plants, their favourite books and jars of pens and pencils to create a colourful and functional display.

A Stimulating Space

Although your chosen spot should be calming and focussed, adding a personal touch will encourage your little one to spend more time learning in their new study space. Our Tidy Magnetic Drawing Board will unleash their inner artist: not only can they release their imagination with chalk or whiteboard pens, but they can also put up their achievements and works of art with magnets to make a personal display.

Photographs of family members and pets will not only keep them company, but will stimulate imagination, encouraging them to use experiences of real life to be creative in writing.
